From Fire to Gold – and Back to Life: WMA Gainesville - Episode 3
Shownotes
Welcome back to episode 3 of our WMA Gainesville podcast series – and this one is full of energy, emotion, and unforgettable moments.
We start by looking at the unbelievable performances on the track:
🏃♀️ A Canadian woman in the W80 category ran the 200 meters in under 36 seconds.
🇺🇸 In the W70 age group, an American athlete clocked 31.40 seconds – performances that leave you speechless, regardless of age or experience.
🇩🇪 And in the M40 pole vault, Germany’s Dennis Schober cleared a staggering 5.10 meters – just 12 centimeters below his lifetime best.
But that’s just the beginning.
Boyke gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how the German Masters team ended up courtside at an Orlando Magic NBA game – including a surprise signature from Franz Wagner and a host manager who turned out to be from Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Then we dive into two very personal and powerful interviews:
🎤 Angela Herzner Angela is not just a world-class thrower in the W50 category – she’s also been a full-time firefighter for 17 years. In this interview, she opens up about the connection between throwing and saving lives, how she rediscovered her passion for sport, and why she believes it’s never too late to return to athletics.
🎤 Wolfgang Berrens Just 10 months ago, Wolfgang collapsed during swim training and was clinically dead for four and a half minutes. By pure chance, a cardiologist happened to be standing behind him and saved his life. Now, less than a year later, Wolfgang is back on the track at the World Championships – sharing his story of survival, gratitude, and strength. It’s emotional. It’s real. And it’s the kind of story you don’t hear every day.
We wrap up with a look at the medal table, including some surprising facts (spoiler: the U.S. is dominating), and a preview of the final day – featuring relays, hurdles, and more world-class performances.
🎧 Tune in now, and don’t forget to send us your feedback, questions, or interview ideas. This podcast is all about the Masters community – and we’d love to include your voice in the next episodes!
